How to Determine When to Install Acoustic Insulation
March 12th, 2009By Brad Collins
Installing acoustic insulation can be costly. It is recommended that you first determine the type of sounds you are hearing and where they are coming from. Sounds can affect your life in many ways. Some sounds are relaxing and soothing. These usually give you energy and make you happy. Other sounds, or noise, tend to irritate or disrupt your life. In order to determine if acoustic insulation materials are the answer to your noise problems, you must first understand how sound travels.
Sound travels in waves. Sound waves bounce off solid objects causing a reverberation or echo. Soft, padded surfaces slow down the speed in which sound waves move. Soundproofing materials are designed to slow down or completely stop sound waves. The trickiest part in eliminating or abating a noise is to find the source of the problem. In other words, where is the disturbing sound coming from and can it be remedied with a simple installation of an acoustic insulating material?
There are many types of acoustic soundproofing materials on the market. Some may not solve your problem completely while others could add to the problem by giving sound waves another surface to bounce off of. Look for materials that absorb sound. These alone can be the solution to your noise problems. If you have tried a product and the results were not satisfactory or if you are afraid to invest in a product because you are not sure if it is the right solution then it may be time to consult an acoustic insulation professional. It may sound like an expensive alternative but on the other hand, you could go ahead and spend money and time just to find out that the noise is still there. Keep in mind too that many insulation products need special handling and machinery to install.
If you are having trouble relaxing, concentrating, or being productive in your own home, then it may be time to go ahead and find a fix for your noise problem. There are many acoustical insulation solutions on the market. You can find some at your local home improvement store or on the internet. Again, if this is too much for you to do on your own, there are many resources available including professionals that have training in the proper installation of acoustic soundproofing products as well as finding the source of noise.
