How to Reduce Noise Using Acoustic Insulation
March 13th, 2009By Brad Collins
There are many types of acoustic insulation products on the market. Some acoustic insulation materials reduce noise and others absorb the noise. In order to better understand these products we must first determine the difference between noise absorption and noise reduction.
Noise reduction basically means to stop or kill noise before it enters your home through a window or wall. In order to accomplish this you must add space and mass between you and the noise. Double paned windows are an excellent acoustic insulation product for adding more mass between you and the noise. Space can also be added by installing a second wall within all the exterior walls in your home. A second wall will add space for air, the air between the two walls will help reduce the amount of noise that can penetrate into your home. Soundproof acoustic insulation panels, foam, or other material can be added between the two walls for an even better result.
Noise absorption means to stop noise from echoing, reflecting, and reverberating. In other words, it means adding things within your home to stop noise from continuing in its normal manner. Noise absorption can be accomplished by simply adding items like carpeting, area rugs, curtains, larger pieces of furniture, furniture that is upholstered, and wall coverings. Sound depends on flat surfaces to travel. Adding items that will dampen or dull out the sound can significantly help reduce the noise level or echo of noise within your home. Other acoustical insulation materials like acoustic ceiling tiles and acoustic flooring can also be used but may not be necessary. Start small and see where it gets you first, if that doesn’t work you can then move on to more expensive solutions.
Before you knock down walls or build new walls in your home start by first looking at the interior of your walls, doors, and windows. Make sure they are properly sealed. Add weather stripping or caulking to any cracks and gaps. This will eliminate sound from penetrating through those spaces. If this doesn’t help reduce the sound penetration then it may be time to consider replacing your windows for dual paned windows. These windows are filled with a gas substance between the panes. The gas helps prevent sound from entering while also making your home more energy efficient.
Acoustic insulation is essential in the soundproofing of your home. Here we have shown you that there are many types of acoustical insulation materials to choose from. Fixing your noise problems does not have to be expensive or difficult. Remember that soundproofing is about trial and error. You may not be able to fix the problem completely with one product and it may take a little elbow grease to get the job done.
