soundrpoofing-insulationAcoustic insulation is the way to go if you are someone who likes sleeping in on a Saturday morning.  Do you work the graveyard shift and need to rest while others are up and active in your home?  Are you looking for an oasis within the walls of your home?  There are many soundproofing solutions for you on the market.  Fixing your noise problem is easy and inexpensive if you do your homework first.

During Home Construction Soundproofing

Step#1
Determine which walls will need soundproofing materials.  It is recommended that you go ahead and soundproof the entire home but if your budget is tight you should at least soundproof the bedrooms.

Step #2
Make sure that all of the plumbing and electrical wiring is complete in the walls before you begin installing acoustic insulation materials.

Step#3
Apply the acoustical insulation of your choice.  There are many types of acoustic insulations on the market.  Fiberglass insulation, spray or blown foam insulation, cellulose insulation, rockwool insulation, paper fiber insulation, and other similar forms are effective in reducing noise.  Recycled blue jeans are the green alternative to insulating.  Search the internet for unique materials like this because your local home improvement store probably does not carry it.  If you are not familiar with any of these suggested products or on how to properly install them then it is highly recommended that you consult with an acoustic insulation professional.  A professional will be able to quickly and accurately apply the product.

Step #4
Once the insulation has been placed, hang drywall panels to the walls.  Make sure all seams are tight and properly filled.  A wall that is completely sealed and tightly insulated will give you the best soundproofing results.

Step #5
Add texture to walls.  Eliminate as many flat surfaces as possible.  Flat surfaces enable sound to travel further.

Existing Home Soundproofing
Step #1
Determine which walls need to be insulated.  For best results begin by removing drywall from only one side of the wall which you are planning to insulate.  Installing the insulation material like this will enable you to make sure all crevices are tightly packed with insulation.

Step #2
Another alternative is to only make holes on the drywall at high points on the wall.  This will enable you to use a machine to blow the insulation in the interior space.  Your local hardware store or rental center should have the proper machinery and materials.  Some products like acoustic foam insulation can be found in small spray cans or larger containers for easy installation.

Step #3
A final alternative is to leave the walls alone.  Instead you can apply a manufactured wall covering that can easily be installed and works just as well.  This option comes in a wide range of colors or you can choose to paint them yourself.  This application may cost you more in the end but it will take less time and your existing walls will remain untouched.  These materials are made to specifically prevent sound from entering or leaving a room. Choose from panels, vibration barriers, and acoustical matting for best results.

Step #4
Make sure all holes, cracks, or gaps are covered.  This final touch is essential if you want to get the most accurate results from your soundproofing installation.  There is no point in spending all that money if you don’t plan on sealing the product properly.

Step#5
Adding texture and color to this type of product is entirely up to you.

There you go. Several ideas how to soundproof and insulate your home for that added peace and quiet.
